Just a quick update for this week's wake-up column. We have started a new group on LinkedIn which will serve as a tool to enhance communication between economic development partners, government officials, small business owners and those with an interest in starting a small business. The group is open to everyone and will feature; a help section, services offered section, news, small business classifieds, and employment. The only thing needed in order to join is to sign-up for a Linked in account which is free of charge.

The CNY Small Biz Project Weekly Wake- Up
Good morning!
This week we wanted to alert you to a small business program available to businesses in Herkimer County called the "HCIDA Straight Lease Program". As stated on their website:
"In certain instances, the HCIDA can assist a company by holding nominal title to property through its Straight Lease Program. This offers the company exemption from sales and mortgage recording taxes, as well as reduced real property taxes."
It may be worth looking into, especially if you are looking to start a business which needs physical space, in an economic climate which will be, quite possibly, raising property taxes (again).
This program, as stated above, is ran by the HCIDA, which stands for the Herkimer County Industrial Development Agency (HCIDA). It is a public benefit corporation created by the Herkimer County Legislature in 1970, under the New York State Industrial Development Agency Act of 1969. The mission of the agency is to help create or retain job opportunities within Herkimer County by both assisting existing area industries and by marketing the area to prospective new industries. (HCIDA, 2006)
A couple of contacts are:
Executive Director:
Mark D. Feane
Marketing Coordinator:
Martin R. Regan
Financial Manager:
Lillian A. Oram
They can be reached at:

The Weekly Wake-Up - Week of Jan 9th, 2009
Good evening!
Tonight we wanted to highlight a little known aspect of federal government grants; faith based and community ititiatives. This program provides grants (IE free funding) for funding of programs and initiatives which benefit out local communities and perhaps your business. As stated on the the White House website:
"If you are in the business of caring for people in need, you need money to do your job. Chances are that if you had a little more money, you’d be able to help more people and do your work better. That’s where Federal grants come into play. If you run an organization to help those in need, you may be eligible to receive Federal money through grant programs."
(White House, 2009)
You can download the full pdf version of the grant program and learn more about it at:
